In the film The Departed by Martin Scorsese shows the life of Billy Costigan a Boston cop who joins a mob who he has had family ties to and has know the mob leader from a young age. Billy is harassed and verbally abused by his superiors to go under cover before he can graduate from the police academy and will be awarded a bonus if his task is completed.
In this film I believe that while there are some exaggerations for the sake of entertainment and maybe to enrich the plot of the film, I do believe that the film did show what I believe to be an accurate depiction of the corruption that goes on between mafias and police forces. Some other places where I have seen this is in a show called “Narcos” that tells the story of Pablo Escobar and the drug business that he started and it shows lots of interaction between FDA and the corruption of the local police. A lot of the times in the show there are moments where Pablo Escobar is surrounded by the police and is able to escape because he has bought out those officers that are sent to are to arrest him and they wont do anything because they work for him. As this is a conflicting issue all throughout the first 2 seasons similar to how in the film the mafia was able to get a heads up from Colin someone who is in the police force that has all the information on what was going to happen or when the police would show up. In conclusion I believe that the film “The Departed” does a good job at depicting the history and corruption between the mafia and the police force.
