The way the AI is portrayed in both A Space Odyssey and Ex Machina is that they are deceiving they act like they were programmed, they listen, do as told, and show no signs of hostility until something changes in the plot when the AI becomes aware that they are going to be destroyed or replaced.
Some things that the male protagonist have in common with each other in both A Space Odyssey and Ex Machina is that the male protagonist builds a relationship with the AI like they were an actual human asking them “human” questions like about their personal life and family.
I think that A Space Odyssey is the most accurate what life will be like with AI, some things that are seen in the film aren’t too far off with what we can do today with just the technology on our phones like being able to ask it any question and it will find the answer or have it connected to multiple devices in your home like your lights, locks, security cameras , thermostat , and even your car.
I think the monolith has a lot of meaning to it and it is up to interpretation, but I believe that the monolith is meant to be a screen. In the entire film the monolith is shown several times and the rectangular shape is emphasized a lot . In the film the astronauts use monolith shaped screens to watch the news or to display any information on their screens. Also in the end of the film when the man is in the bed and the scenes of the film start to play over again like it was a screen.
