There Will Be Blood

In the film “There Will Be Blood” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson shows a story about a oil man named Daniel who started his own oil mining company, when he find this little town called Plainview. The relationship between father and the son starts out to be a normal father son relationship but at the same time the father seems to be manipulating the son as a “pretty face” so he would be able to expand his oil business. Later in the film when a man named Eli who tells him about Plainview and how the town is rich in oil, Daniel follows through with his plan an begins to drill there. The town quickly changes and adapts to the new oil mine that’s in the middle of the town and Eli tries to get Daniel to be apart of the town. I presume that everyone in the small town is religious because since the beginning Eli has been asking for the new roads that Daniel was going to build to lead to the church. Daniel hesitates to join or stop by and continues to be focused on his oil mine.

We can see the relationship between the father Daniel and his son H.W slowly start drifting apart as soon as his father becomes more involved in his business than raising his son. One day when things were going just as usual then the oil mine starts to break down and everyone surrounds it then suddenly explodes with oil causing a huge stream of black dark rich oil to burst into the air painting everyone in the vicinity of the mine. The loud explosion causes H.W to lose his hearing completely. Daniel rushes to grab H.W and he places him inside of a building. We can see in this scene how H.W is trying to hold on to his father because he’s scared, he can’t hear anything. And for anyone that could be really traumatic, not being able to hear anything. His father pushes him off an runs off to the mine. This could be seen as one point in where we see a disconnect between father and son.

The father becomes more distant when he realizes he is not able to fully communicate with his son and sees him as a bother that gets in the way of his business. H.W also gets frustrated with his father because he notices that he starts to care less for him. One night when Daniel and his son were both sleeping in the same house, H.W decided to burn down the house while his father was sleeping. His father wakes up and starts to chase after him in anger. When Daniel believes he has had enough he sets up a plan to send H.W on the train by himself and abandon him. Years go by and H.W meets his father again and immediately H.W attempts at beating his father in anger for leaving him and not loving him I presume.

It later skips further into the movie when Daniel is much much older we get a sense they have grown far apart and the father doesn’t love H.W but his son still cares about him very much after everything that has happened. We can see how the oil business that his father cared for a lot caused them to distance themselves from each other more and more throughout the film.
