War Films

People watch certain genres of films because that’s just what they enjoy and everyone has their own personal preference. The war genre is most likely popular for various reasons, those who like to learn about war and are interested in the historical aspect of it, those who are seeking a action packed movie and believe they will get that from a war movie, or those who are drawn towards the idea of war and how it’s like. These movies aren’t necessarily accurate depictions of war but for some it shows what it could be like and what it does to people.

Some of surrounding themes in war movies especially Hurt Locker is dealing with the death of loss of comrades and others, having a sense of duty , yearning to back home, and also the idea of wanting to go back.  In the film we saw the soldiers having to deal with the death of their partners and others they knew and how it took an emotional toll on them and they weren’t able to function or think properly sometimes. And they show how many of the soldiers who wanted to leave end up going back because it’s where it makes sense for them to go because they feel like they need to serve their country or they don’t like living a normal life they need that adrenaline rush, that sense that they could be killed at any moment.

I believe the main character was a hero since they took charge and did their best. In modern time we believe that a hero that is someone that is all good and great to everyone and is never wrong, they are a example of what to be and do. But in other cultures like Greek mythology I’ve learned that heroes can be “bad” too. While the main character wasn’t a complete antagonist in the film he did cause disruptions that seemed like he didn’t care that others were in danger and that is where he could  be seen as someone who is not heroic. But there were many times that fit into the modern day “hero” like him risking himself to save this man who was pleading for his life because he had a bomb attached to him and he wanted to live. But there were also moments were he was a “bad person” like when the squad leader told him they can head out and that it’s too dangerous to stay but instead he didn’t listen, threw off his headset that cut off all communications and stayed to try to defuse the bomb, by doing that he put other members of his team in possible danger because they were starting to get looked at from multiple building and recorded as well. There more examples in the film that could be tossed around back and forth whether he is a hero or not but ultimately I believe that the main character is someone who could be seen as a hero.
